3 Day Tour Marrakech to Merzouga Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

We normally leave Marrakech around 8:00 a.m. and cross the High Atlas Mountains over the Tizi n’Tichka road. The route is scenic, but it is a mountain road with bends, changing weather and many viewpoints, so the first day is about enjoying the journey rather than rushing from one stop to another.

The main cultural stop is Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can walk through the ksar and climb higher for views over the surrounding valley. Lunch is normally taken in or near Ait Ben Haddou before continuing toward Ouarzazate.

After Ouarzazate, the road continues through the Skoura palm area, Kelaat M’Gouna and the Valley of Roses before reaching the Dades Valley. Depending on daylight and your pace, we can include short photo stops along the way rather than trying to turn every town into a full visit.

You spend the first night in the Dades area. Dinner and breakfast are normally included with the accommodation used for this itinerary. The exact hotel category can be adjusted when we prepare your quote.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga – Camel Ride – Luxury Desert Camp

On Day 2 of the 3 day tour Marrakech to Merzouga, continue after breakfast through the Dades region toward Tinghir and Todra Gorge. There is time for a walk beneath the high canyon walls before continuing through the southeast toward Erfoud and Merzouga.

Lunch is taken on the road, and we continue toward the Erg Chebbi dunes. Arrival time in Merzouga changes with the season, road conditions and how long you spend at the earlier stops. We plan the day so you reach the desert with enough time for the dune experience rather than promising an exact sunset time.

At the edge of the dunes, you can ride a camel to the camp or use a 4×4 if you prefer not to ride. The desert camp on this itinerary is a luxury camp with private tents rather than a basic shared setup. Dinner is served at the camp, followed by time around the fire when conditions allow.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Draa Valley Route – High Atlas – Marrakech

If you want to see sunrise, you can get up early before breakfast. Afterward, leave Merzouga for the long return journey to Marrakech. Depending on the route and conditions, we travel through the southeast toward Rissani, Alnif, Tazarine, Nkob and the Draa Valley before reconnecting with the road toward Ouarzazate and the High Atlas.

This is the longest driving day of the tour. Merzouga to Marrakech is a major cross-country journey, and you should expect roughly 9 to 10 hours of driving before meal stops, traffic and mountain-road conditions are added. Arrival in Marrakech is normally in the evening. If you want a slower return with more sightseeing time, the 4 day Marrakech to Merzouga tour is a more comfortable choice.

The advantage is that you can include the Sahara in a short Morocco trip. The trade-off is the amount of driving, especially on Day 3.
