Travelers overlooking Marrakech at sunset while planning how many days to spend in the city

How Many Days in Marrakech? 2, 3, 4 or 5 Days From a Local Guide

If you are planning your first trip to Marrakech, three days is the amount of time I normally recommend.

Two days is enough to see the main highlights, but the visit will feel quite busy. With three days, you can explore the Medina properly, visit the main monuments, experience Jemaa el-Fna at night and still have time to enjoy the city instead of constantly rushing.

Four or five days gives you much more flexibility and allows you to add a day trip outside Marrakech.

I am a licensed Moroccan tour guide based in Marrakech, and I have been guiding travelers in Morocco for more than 20 years. This is how I would divide your time depending on how many days you have.

How Many Days Do You Need in Marrakech?

Travelers overlooking Marrakech while planning a 2, 3, 4 or 5 day stay
For most first-time visitors, three days is ideal for Marrakech itself, while four or five days gives you time for day trips and a slower pace.

First-time visitors:

Time in MarrakechMy recommendation
1 dayOnly the main highlights
2 daysMinimum I would recommend
3 daysBest choice for most first-time visitors
4 daysMarrakech plus one day trip
5 daysRelaxed Marrakech plus one or two excursions
6–7 daysUse Marrakech as a base or add a multi-day Morocco trip

If you are coming mainly for Marrakech itself, three full days is usually enough.

If you also want the Atlas Mountains, Essaouira, Ouzoud Waterfalls, Agafay or another excursion, I would plan at least four days.

Is One Day in Marrakech Enough?

One day in Marrakech is possible, but it is not enough to properly understand the city.

If you only have one day, concentrate on the historic Medina rather than trying to see everything.

A realistic first-day plan could include:

  • Ben Youssef Madrasa
  • the souks
  • Bahia Palace
  • Jemaa el-Fna
  • the Koutoubia area
  • dinner or an evening walk in the Medina

I would not try to add Majorelle Garden, several museums and distant neighborhoods on the same day.

The old city is dense, and distances on a map can be misleading. You will spend time walking, navigating the souks, stopping for tea, looking inside shops and simply taking in the atmosphere.

If you have only one day, a guided Marrakech walking tour can also save a lot of time because you do not have to constantly stop and work out where you are going.

Is Two Days in Marrakech Enough?

Two days is the minimum I normally recommend for a first visit.

You can see most of the major sights, but you need to organize the days carefully.

Day 1: Historic Marrakech

I would spend the first day mainly inside the Medina.

You could visit Ben Youssef Madrasa, walk through the souks, see Bahia Palace and finish around Jemaa el-Fna in the late afternoon and evening.

This is also the day when having a local guide can be particularly useful.

Marrakech is not a city where every attraction is connected by one obvious street. The old Medina has hundreds of small alleys, and first-time visitors can easily spend a lot of time trying to find their way.

Day 2: Gardens and Modern Marrakech

On the second day, you could visit Majorelle Garden and explore part of Gueliz, the modern city.

Depending on your interests, you might also add the Saadian Tombs, a hammam, shopping or a food experience.

Two days works, but I would not add a long excursion outside Marrakech unless you have already visited the city before.

Are Three Days in Marrakech Enough?

For most travelers, three days in Marrakech is the sweet spot.

You have enough time to see the important places without turning the trip into a checklist.

A simple structure could be:

Day 1: Medina and Main Sights

For a first visit, three days gives you enough time to explore the Medina, major monuments, souks and still enjoy Marrakech at a comfortable pace.

Spend your first day discovering the historic heart of Marrakech.

Visit some of the major monuments, walk through the souks and experience Jemaa el-Fna toward sunset.

This is the day I usually recommend doing a Marrakech walking tour, especially if Marrakech is your first stop in Morocco.

Once you understand how the Medina works, the rest of your stay becomes much easier.

Day 2: Gardens, Gueliz and a Slower Afternoon

Visit Majorelle Garden in the morning and spend some time outside the Medina.

You could explore Gueliz, have a longer lunch, shop, visit a hammam or return to areas of the souks you enjoyed on the first day.

Day 3: Choose According to Your Interests

Your third day gives you flexibility.

You could spend another full day in Marrakech if you enjoy cities, food and shopping.

Or you could take a shorter excursion such as the Atlas Mountains, Ourika Valley or Agafay.

If you already know that you will have exactly three days, you can also read the detailed 3 Days in Marrakech itinerary on MoroccoUnfolded for a complete day-by-day plan.

What About Four Days in Marrakech?

Travelers choosing between Ourika, Imlil and Agafay on a day trip from Marrakech
With four or five days in Marrakech, you have enough time to add a day trip to places such as Ourika, Imlil or Agafay.

Four days is an excellent amount of time if Marrakech is your main destination.

You can spend three days exploring the city and use the fourth day for an excursion.

This is where your options become much better.

Popular Marrakech day trips include:

  • Ourika Valley
  • Ouzoud Waterfalls
  • Essaouira
  • Agafay
  • Imlil and the High Atlas Mountains
  • Ait Ben Haddou, although this is a much longer driving day

You can compare the main options in our Marrakech excursions and day trips guide.

For most travelers, I prefer this rhythm to squeezing an excursion into a two- or three-day city break.

Marrakech deserves some time of its own.

Is Five Days in Marrakech Too Much?

No.

Five days can actually be very comfortable, especially if you do not enjoy rushing.

You could spend three days in Marrakech itself and use one or two days for excursions.

For example:

Day 1: Guided Medina and historic monuments
Day 2: Majorelle, Gueliz and shopping
Day 3: Relaxed Marrakech, food, hammam or additional sights
Day 4: Day trip
Day 5: Second excursion or free day

Five days is also useful if you are staying in a nice riad or hotel and actually want time to enjoy it.

Travel should not always mean leaving the hotel at 8 AM and returning at night.

What If You Have Six or Seven Days?

If you have six or seven days available, I would normally consider going beyond Marrakech rather than spending every day inside the city.

You could keep three days for Marrakech and use the remaining days for a short Morocco itinerary.

For example, depending on your interests, you might combine Marrakech with:

  • Essaouira
  • the High Atlas Mountains
  • Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou
  • the Sahara
  • the Dades Valley
  • another Moroccan city

Morkosh Tours also organizes private tours from Marrakech if you want to travel farther while keeping the itinerary flexible.

Should You Take a Day Trip From Marrakech?

If you have at least four days, yes.

But choose the excursion based on what you actually want to experience.

For mountains and Berber villages, look at Ourika or Imlil.

For waterfalls, Ouzoud is the obvious choice.

For the Atlantic coast, Essaouira is one of the best options.

Agafay is much closer to Marrakech and works well if you want a desert-style landscape without spending several days traveling to the Sahara.

Ait Ben Haddou is beautiful, but remember that it is a long driving day from Marrakech. I would not recommend adding it simply because it looks close on a map.

Should You Stay in the Medina or Gueliz?

For a first visit, staying inside or close to the Medina makes sightseeing easier.

You will be close to the souks, Jemaa el-Fna and many historic attractions.

Gueliz is more modern, easier for vehicles and convenient if you prefer wider streets, restaurants, cafés and easier taxi access.

Many visitors also divide their time between the two areas.

Taxis between the Medina and Gueliz are inexpensive compared with European or North American cities. Our Marrakech taxi prices guide explains realistic fares, night rates and what to expect from petit taxis.

Do You Need a Guide in Marrakech?

You do not need a guide for every day of your stay.

However, I normally recommend having a guide on your first day, especially if this is your first visit to Morocco.

A guided introduction helps you understand the Medina, how the souks are organized, where the main monuments are and how to find your way afterward.

Then you can explore independently for the rest of the trip.

This is one reason a three-day visit works so well: guided introduction first, independent exploration afterward, then an excursion or another experience on the final day.

How Long Should First-Time Visitors Stay?

For a first trip, my recommendation is simple:

Stay three days if Marrakech is part of a longer Morocco itinerary.

Stay four or five days if Marrakech is your main destination and you also want one or two excursions.

Two days is possible, but it will be fast.

One day gives you only an introduction.

More than five days makes sense if you are traveling slowly, working remotely, relaxing at a resort or using Marrakech as a base.

My Recommendation as a Marrakech Guide

If one of my clients asked me how many days to stay in Marrakech, I would normally say:

Three days for Marrakech itself. Four days if you want one good day trip. Five days if you want to slow down and enjoy both the city and the surrounding region.

Marrakech is much better when you have time to stop.

Sit for mint tea. Get lost a little in the souks. Spend time in Jemaa el-Fna after sunset. Have a long Moroccan lunch instead of running to the next monument.

Three well-planned days can give you a much better Marrakech experience than trying to see everything in 24 hours.
