DAY 2 : Merzouga – Erg Chebbi 4X4 TOUR :
After a traditional Berber breakfast, we will have a nice ride on local 4wd to explore the villages around the huge sand dunes, we will visit Khamlia which is a slave village was known a longtime ago, (Khamlia is an excellent base from which to explore the desert and bird-watchers will be enthralled with what they see. In spring, a lake forms near Merzouga which attracts pink flamingos. Other rare birds stop here during spring migration. The desert is also the year round environment for many desert reptiles and mammals.)
In Khamlia, apart from Berber live also black people, descendants of slaves from Sudan, who had been sold to Morocco many years ago. They founded the music group Gnawa, now famous not only within Morocco.
Visit some lead and kohl mining, after its time to assist the Berber Pizza made by a real Tuareg in the Desert, having a tasty mint tea while the Pizza is cooking with wood fire, going back to the Hotel around 4pm, you can use the pool at hotel which is located just in front of the Huge sand dune in Erg Chebbi.
We will meet our Camels in the afternoon to take a Camel trekking for 1 hour into the Dunes to reach our desert camp at Erg Chebbi. Each person rides their own Camel and additional Camels are provided to carry your luggage. The Camel trek is usually just prior to sunset, so that you may enjoy the sun setting over the landscape from the top of the Dunes.
Once we arrive at the Desert camp, we are greeted with a cup of delicious hot mint tea and we spend the evening under the stars, on the dunes and beside the warmth of the fireside built especially for you.
We enjoy a locally cooked meal of Tagine and couscous (special diets are catered for), a drum party and story swapping. Those that wish to can sleep directly under the stars, but there are Bivouacs for everyone. Enjoy the stars in the desert because this is a rare opportunity to see them in this way as there are no artificial lights around, so you can fully appreciate the romanced and glory of the skies above. I assume that there is a toilet in Desert camp, in other time there is a nice toilet, shower, air-conditioning and Pool at the Kasbah Hotel in the Desert.
